Rooftop Packaged AC/Gas Heating – Big Box Stores, Illinois

On two well-known superstores, we retrofitted approximately several hundred tons of HVAC equipment of 70-80 rooftop package units (4-40 tons) and unitary heaters. IPMVP-compliant M&V on the HVAC energy consumption at both buildings indicated an average of 27% kWh reduction for cooling and 34% reduction in heating (natural gas therms). Payback on both stores was 12-24 months without any utility incentives.

Together with the customer’s existing HVAC contractor, we subsequently retrofitted an additional 5.5 million SF of its stores including a new LEED-certified store. The customer reported strong savings in all locations. In some locations the customer received rebates for natural gas efficiency, in other locations it was denied because the payback was to fast to qualify.
